Blog Post 15. The Case for Major and Minor Pairs in Swing Trading

The author shares their experience in forex trading, highlighting the advantages of focusing on major and minor currency pairs. They emphasize reliability, reduced SWAP costs, and strategic simplicity using the Blackwave Strategy. By narrowing their approach, they achieve predictable returns while avoiding the unpredictability of exotic pairs. Consistency is key in trading success.

When I first started trading forex, I quickly realized that trying to conquer every currency pair out there was like chasing shadows. The market is vast, and exotic pairs, while tempting, often brought unpredictable volatility and unnecessary stress. I spent quite a few months in a USDZAR trade that helped solidify the lesson. So, I decided to narrow my focus.

That’s when I discovered the beauty of sticking to major and minor pairs. They’re reliable, familiar, and full of opportunity. These pairs, like EUR/USD or GBP/JPY or my current open trades USDCAD and NZDUSD, move with global trends and respond predictably to economic news. They’re liquid, which means no frustrating gaps or sudden surprises caused by low trading volume.

Another major advantage of focusing on major and minor pairs is the reduced cost of SWAPs. For those unfamiliar, SWAPs are the overnight interest fees you pay or earn for holding positions. Exotic pairs often come with much higher SWAPs, and if you’re swing trading like I do, those negative SWAPs can accumulate quickly. Over time, they can effectively raise the average entry price across your grid, making it harder to turn a profit. By trading major and minor pairs, which have much lower SWAPs, I avoid this unnecessary drain on profitability. In fact, I love to buy EURCHF and USDCHF when they swing low into oversold conditions. Why? Positive SWAPS! The longer I hold the more the broker actually pays me. Those in the know call it the “carry trade” but who cares what they call it. Over time it effectively improves average entry while offering the relative stability of a major forex pair.

Using the Blackwave Strategy, I’ve learned that focusing on these pairs doesn’t just simplify trading—it makes it more strategic. When your energy isn’t scattered across dozens of exotic combinations or even cryptocurrency too, you can spend more time perfecting your grid and hedging techniques. And trust me, the results speak for themselves. As I’ve said before on the social media site X, I like to pick a set-up, pick a strategy and go tunnel vision. This process of eliminating what I will and won’t trade is part of that.

Trading majors and minors also comes with another bonus: you can leverage years of historical data. These pairs have patterns, tendencies, and movements that make them perfect for refining a systematic approach like the Blackwave Strategy.

Sure, exotic pairs might sometimes look exciting with their dramatic swings. But for me, it’s all about consistency. By sticking to major and minor pairs, I’ve reduced the surprises and built a foundation for predictable, sustainable returns.
