Follow the Waves
Swing trading is a trading approach that embraces patience, strategy, and simplicity. At its core, swing trading involves identifying and riding the natural waves of the market, particularly over daily and weekly timeframes. This method is not about constant action but rather about precision and discipline. Personally speaking and coming from a stockbroking background the time frame suits my previous experience too.
The Power of Simplicity
Swing trading thrives on the principle of simplicity. By focusing on medium-term trends, traders can avoid the noise of minute-by-minute fluctuations and concentrate on larger, more predictable moves. This clarity reduces overtrading and emotional decision-making, fostering a more stable trading mindset. I am one of those guys who loves systems. When I fall into one it is easy for me to keep it going. I actually find security in repeating what works. I don’t really get bored and try something different. I guess I am boring!
Managing Risk Effectively
Every successful swing trader knows the importance of risk management. Markets are inherently unpredictable, but by using tools like position sizing and hedging strategies, traders can protect their capital while maximizing their potential returns. The key is to align each trade with a well-thought-out plan that accounts for market volatility. Again, relating this to my own grid system, the lower the position size and the fewer positions the less risk there is. My low risk account has just entered it’s ninth year.
The Role of Time
Patience is the cornerstone of swing trading. Allowing trades to unfold over days or weeks requires a calm and measured approach. For those willing to wait, the rewards often outweigh the risks. Swing trading encourages traders to see the bigger picture and let time compound their gains.
By combining simplicity, robust risk management, and the patience to let time do its work, swing trading becomes an art form that suits disciplined traders.
To be honest you don’t need to be very smart, you just need to know the strategy and execute it, especially when it’s boring, especially when clients are texting because they are bored or fearful or greedy. Time passes, waves roll over and counter-trends begin and over time they keep doing this. Do me a favour, pick any forex pair and look at the weekly graph and tell me if you don’t see waves. I said something similar to Ian, a friend of my in London in 2013, and in 2014 I formed the company BlackWAVE. It’s not Black Trend or Black Fib. From time to time I get impressed all over again by the simplicity of the strategy.
